Borough police said the bear was spotted on N. 5th Street between West Callowhill Street and Blooming Glen Road on Friday afternoon, Sept. 15. He may have been headed south toward Branch Road.

If spotted, use caution and do not approach, they added.

An estimated 20,000 black bears call Pennsylvania home, according to the state Game Commission.

While attacks are "exceedingly rare," residents who encounter a black bear should stay calm, back away slowly, and make some noise to alert the bear of their presence.
